The pad clamping system on a conventional-style master collet is designed with a screw that goes through the collet head angle and against the side of the pad's shoulder. With this system, the operator must remove the collet from the machine spindle to change the pads. These collets are available for most older machines. Pads can be purchased in a variety of sizes, shapes and materials. After the initial purchase of the master collet, pads in a variety of sizes, shapes, and materials can be purchased for less than the cost of solid collets.
